Why Install a Grab Bar?

A grab bar is a great bathroom addition for aging seniors or anyone with limited mobility. As your parents or grandparents get older, they may have difficulty getting in and out of the bathtub or shower. Consider installing an Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) approved grab bar for increased safety. Towel bars, plain walls, and shower doors are not safe to grab for if you slip and fall in the bathroom. Grab bars, however, are incredibly sturdy. They’re easy to grip, and they’re designed to hold hundreds of pounds without pulling away from the wall.

DIY Grab Bar Installation Tips

While we recommend hiring a professional plumber to install your grab bar, you may opt for a do-it-yourself installation. Here are a few quick tips:

  • When it comes to selecting your grab bar, there’s a wide range of quality available. The saying “you get what you pay for” typically applies.
  • Most grab bars have three screw holes in each mounting flange. You will only be able to anchor two of the three screws into a typical 1½-inch wide stud. For the third screw, use a plastic anchor. As long as the screws penetrate at least 1 inch into sound wood, the grab bar should meet or exceed the 250-pound ADA load rating.
  • If your grab bar doesn’t have a gasket, put a little bit of silicone caulk behind and around the flanges. You don’t want water getting behind the walls!
  • Try to avoid using toggle bolts unless you’re sure you’re going into metal studs.

When in doubt, leave it to the professionals to ensure your grab bar is perfectly installed!
