About Waste Stack Plumbing

Waste stack plumbing involves the maintenance, repair, or installation of your home’s drain-waste-vent (DWV) pipes. These pipes are responsible for safely removing waste from your home without gurgles or fumes. The centerpiece of a DWV system is the main stack that runs straight up through your roof. This pipe is usually 3 or 4 inches in diameter. A secondary stack, 2 or 3 inches in diameter, serves as an additional branch of the DWV system. Branch drainpipes carry wastewater from specific fixtures to the waste stacks. The water then travels downward through the stacks to the main drain line. Finally, the wastewater is carried out of your house through an underground lateral sewer line, which leads to the St. Louis City or St. Louis County sewage system (or to a septic system, if you live in a more rural area). Check out our blog for more information on lateral waste line repairs.

What Your Waste Stack Is Made Of

Newer homes feature plastic piping in their waste stacks and branch drains. The first type of plastic pipe to be used was black ABS pipe. However, since the 1970s, ABS has been replaced by white PVC pipe. In rare cases, drainpipes are made of copper. Copper drainpipes often feature plumbing cleanouts that allow for easier drain clearing and maintenance. In older St. Louis homes, cast iron waste stacks are common. Cast iron drain stacks tend to rust after 80 years or so, requiring replacement or repair. Branch drains made of galvanized steel are also common in older homes. These are likely to rust and corrode shut, often requiring replacement. The main drain line, or waste stack mainline, in older homes may be made of clay pipe or other porous material. Tree roots sometimes work their way into the main line, causing wastewater back-up in your home. If this is the case, contact us immediately! Our plumbers specialize in augering and repairing the main lines of your waste stack.
